DVDS
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban: This is a great story from author JK Rowling, a great screenplay from
Steve Kloves and the direction from Alfonso Cuaron is "spot on." See it, especially for the 'Time Turner' sequence;
that will have your head spinning a bit.
Ladies in Lavender: Top of the line acting from Maggie Smith and Judi Dench. A delicately
written film about two older sisters living on the coast of Cornwall who discover something...unusual...on the beach. Skillfully written
and directed by actor Charles Dance. How Mr. Dance created a work that is both delicate and highly charged, I will never figure out.
Absolutely brilliant. Smith, Dench and Dance...can I have more please?
The Secret of Roan Inish: This magical story set in Ireland is old-fashioned storytelling at its best.
An Irish legend comes to life (and without any special effects)! Full of character and charm. I adore this film.
Rosemary & Thyme: As in all of the above, again coming out of the British Isles, we have
newly written scripts (not taken from books) about two women who love gardening and form
a friendship and a landscaping business. Dead bodies keep popping up and these sleuthing gardeners
solve many a murder mystery. Filmed in lush gardens throughout Britain and (for the second series) even on the
French Riviera and the Italian coast. Actresses Pam Ferris and Felicity Kendal are perfect; you get to know their characters so well
that you feel as though they are your personal friends. The floral designs in almost every scene, the colors of the costume design
and the lush photography are delicious to watch. Ah, lovely.
Books
1. James, PD -
The Lighthouse
This detective mystery takes place off the Cornish coast
on a small island used by the wealthy and famous to get away from it all. One of PD James favorite
characters, Commander Adam Dagliesh, is called upon to investigate a crime that takes place on the island.
Mid way through his investigation, a new danger appears and a problem
"more insidious than murder" arises. ~ Many of the authors books have been filmed for television.
In 1991 PD James was created Baroness James of Holland Park.
2. Paramahansa Yogananda -
Metaphysical Meditations
This small but powerful book was written in the 1930's, its entries collected from lectures by the author.
If you want to experience the divine,
read this book and practice these simple meditations. Heart, sincerity, and love, color
every blessed word. A brilliant and much loved teacher, Yogananda left a legacy of teachings, books, tapes,
temples, and spiritual retreats.
3. Dumars, Denise & Nyx, Lori -
The Dark Archetype; Exploring the Shadow Side of the Divine
The Dark Archetype is an intelligent investigation into deities who represent the
darker aspects of life. The authors have a wonderful way of infusing humor into a subject
that could be alienating or uncomfortable for some audiences. With fascinationg historical, cultural and mythological information,
Dumars and Nyx teach the reader valuable insights into the darker aspects of the
human spirit. The Dark Archetype serves to deepen the study of ancient myths and
Pagan religion and comes highly recommended.
4. Eliot, George - Daniel Deronda
Nineteenth century aristocrats lend themselves to a story
that includes a beautiful young gambler Gwendolen Harleth and an illegitimate
son named Daniel Deronda. A young Jewish singer is rescued by Daniel and this changes
everything. Shallowness gives way to compassion and many lessons are
taught through social commentary. We sit up and listen as the transformations of
Eliot's wonderful characters weave a great story.
5. Jones, Richard -
Haunted Inns of Britain & Ireland
This non-fiction tour of haunted inns reads like fascinating fiction in some cases, but I believe the accounts
to be entirely true. Many of the hauntings such as the ghost that rises from the floor of the
Old Ferry Boat Inn in Cambridgeshire, or the female ghost at the Lord Crewe Arms
Hotel who asks guests to take a message to her brother in France, take place in historic buildings that are hundreds of years old.
These sightings, witnessed by many people over many years, usually have at their base a real historical event. If you want to create
your own tour of haunted inns or just read about
them, then this is the book for you.
6. JRR Tolkien -
Lord of the Rings A grand epic adventure in Tolkien's beloved Middle Earth. The qualities of
love, friendship, tenderness, honor and glory greet you as you read this great mythic saga of good
against evil. Written in beautiful and sometimes biblical language, the story is rich in character and scenic detail.
Includes hobbits, elves, dwarves, wizards and more.
7. Taylor Caldwell -
Glory and the Lightning Greek courtesan, Aspasia, learns her trade, meets statesman Pericles,
and becomes one of the great women in history. A colorful tale from a master of the historical novel genre.
8. Rhianne Eisler - The Chalice and the Blade Eisler teaches us about the complexities of women and men through ancient history.
Goddess religion past, present and future.
9. William Fleming - Arts and Ideas
A genesis of arts and culture from ancient times up through Classical, Medieval, Monastic, Renaissance and more.
A great education.
10. Aristophanes -
The Frogs
The God Dionysus, who is also the God of theater, just can't find any good playwrights anymore. What's a God to do?
Simple, he descends to the Underworld to find and bring back one of the dead greats.
Read this classic comedy from ancient Greece; generally it can be found in collections of plays by the author.
11. June McDaniel - The Madness of the Saints Secrets revealed
about the ecstatic dedicants of various
Goddesses and Gods from India and Bengal. McDaniel explains the practices and psycological status of some of these holy women and men.
Through observations and stories of their practices, the reader gains an understanding
of how their love for their chosen deity transforms them into the ecstatic state.
12. Kahlil Gibran -
A Treasury of Kahlil Gibran
A collection of stories and poems of passionate wisdom and mysticism. Pure classic beauty.
13. Dion Fortune -
Moon Magic
Morgan Le Fay sets her stage, finds her priest and makes magic. Pagan and esoteric ideals are presented in this stunningly rich novel.
Written in the 1970's and set in London, the author creates some fascinating characterizations that remind
me somewhat of Agatha Christi.
14. Dorothy L. Sayers - Gaudy Night
Sleuthing their way around and between pitfalls, author Harriet Vane and nobleman Lord Peter Wimsey find the answer. Takes place in an academic setting and includes a college poltergeist.
I love the relationship between the two that includes wit, humor and just the right
amount of angst. All of Sayers' mysteries are excellent, the perfect twists and turns with satisfyingly unexpected conclusions.
15. J. M. Barrie - Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens The charming boy next door finds out about the magical lives of the
Fairies and the Little People.
16. Raymond Chandler - Farewell My Lovely
Detective Phillip Marlowe must solve a murder. He makes his way through the Los Angeles gambling circuit, and runs into three beautiful but potentially
dangerous women
