Welcome All!
Some may wonder about the use of the word Demeter in the address of this website. Here is the explanation. My public writing began after I took a college humanities class in which I encountered Greek mythology,
including the Goddess Demeter. Her myth took hold of me and sent me on some serious
inquiry. The result was my first book, "Mysteries of Demeter" (hc, 1999), in which I
explored the great sanctuary of Demeter and Persephone of Eleusis and made an attempt at
reconstructing the seasonal events and liturgy of what is essentially a dead religion.
A passion for the subject took hold of me and sent me on a wonderful adventure.
I've learned that there are lots of ways to link to Our Maker, lots of sacred
myths and religions that are just different paths that lead to the same destination.
Unfortunately these differences haven't been too well understood and have led to
everything from hurt feelings to brutal wars. Sometimes people feel so threatened and
angered by other people's choice of religion, that they really fall out of the original
reason to even have a religion. That is, to link the individual to God as real personal
experience. One of the things that link can give us is the awareness that we were all
created by the same Maker and are all part of the family of humankind. I think one of
the most important things Jesus said was that we should love Our Maker and love others.
So simple, yet often so challenging.
Goddess and God
Some might ask, ‘what is this Goddess thing really about?’ Mainstream religions seem to
have the general notion that a Monotheistic Maker is male and that anything connected with the word ‘Goddess’ is somehow less worthy.
Logically speaking, if we are going to give Our Maker a gender, either gender should suffice.
Many now want a Mother-Father God, a view of Our Maker that reflects both parental
aspects. Some envision the Creatress as the One and others see
the Eternal, the Everlasting, the Limitless Light, as having no gender at all.
There are many powerful sacred stories that can lead us into the Infinite. However we choose, it is our right to seek out and discover what
way of seeing will work to link us with Our Maker.
Kind Regards,
Jennifer
